The Forgotten Veteran Newsletter

In 2018 Veterans Justice Project founder Timothy Pena was sentenced to two years in Arizona Dept. of Corrections for possession of a small amount of marijuana. At arrival to the prison yard, he soon created a Veterans Support Group with the intention of not just bringing veterans together as a group, but also help veterans with access to the VA and transitional services and resources.

Although Tim was experienced with working with transitional and at-risk veterans, he met push-back from the Veterans Justice Outreach (VJO) of the VA with assisting veterans with 'less than honorable' discharges. While the prison counselor was putting up roadblocks for other veterans, they were also preventing Tim from following up on a case of embezzlement he was experiencing with his own VA Disability.

After three years of trial and error of corresponding with incarcerated veterans, the best solution is to maintain contact with the veterans by email, but to rely on snail mail for exchanging forms and documents. Newsletters are categorized according to topic and specific informational need.

Soon after arriving, Tim decided he would rather be homeless in NYC than commit suicide in Phoenix and spent five months in a shelter before obtaining his HUD/VASH voucher for supportive housing while detailing his journey from homeless to homeness with a series of articles called, 'Be the Story'. He has testified before the NYS Department of Veterans Affairs, is a member of the NYC Veterans Task Force and Military Veterans in Journalism, while founding The Forgotten Veteran non-profit.
